The Center for Agricultural Business (CAB) has teamed with several other ag organizations in California to provide supervisor training for agricultural labor management.

The effort was undertaken after CAB conducted regional meetings with representatives from agricultural operations to identify what kind of training programs CAB could provide. Throughout the state, an area that emerged as a priority was supervisor training, in both English and Spanish.

"The role of the supervisor is becoming increasingly important," reported consultant Jess Gomez, who has assisted CAB in training and research. "Employers are recognizing the need to train and educate supervisors in order to provide the tools necessary for supervisors to do their job more effectively and efficiently. Supervisors are the key to a productive and positive work environment.

In order to meet this need CAB has teamed up with agricultural organizations such as the Ventura County Agricultural Association, the Grower Shippers Vegetable Association, and the California Strawberry Commission to offer the training. Workshops have been offered from Napa to Oxnard.

"The workshops give supervisors the opportunity to receive practical, how-to training on a variety of issues," reported Kimberly Naffziger, program development specialist for CAB. "And offering workshops in Spanish allows us to reach a larger audience."

Workshops have included the "Supervising for Success Series, which offered Essential tools for Effective Supervision, Effective Discipline, Effective Supervision for a Safe Work Environment, and others.

More than 400 supervisors throughout the state attended the supervisor training workshops in 1995. Numbers will probably pass the 400 figure in 1996, Nafzigger said. For more information on supervisor training workshops, call Nafzigger at (559) 278-4405.
