The following list contains more detailed descriptions of websites related to food science and nutrition. The list was provided by Jennifer Kahle, student assistant, Center for Food Science and Nutrition Research

Great Jumping-off Points

The Arbor Nutrition Guide. Over 1000 links on one page. Well organized. General limitation: does not give address of where you are when you have linked onto a resource and therefore you cannot bookmark a link if desired; but if you hold the mouse over the link the address will appear at the bottom of the Netscape content area, and you can copy it down for future reference or bookmark if you enter it in manually at Location or Open. This site is easy to use once you get used to it.

The Food Resource. Includes a large food photo collection, information about a large number of associations, commissions and organizations, food related processing and production companies, international food products directory, and specialty stores and foods. An unbelievable number of links.

Food and Nutrition Information Center. Electronic resources.

Food Safety Research Information Office.

Links to nutrition related sources.

A great number of health and nutrition sites.


Dietetics

Dietetics On-line. Includes Marketplace, NutritiOn-line archives with newsletters, chat, professional links, dietetics links, recipe of the month. Chats conducted through America On-line sessions offer continuing education credits for participants.

American Dietetic Association Homepage. Includes Frequently Asked Questions, Nutrition Resources with Good Nutrition Reading List and health organization addresses list, Member Services, and Hot Topics area.

Ask the Dietitian. Large variety of topics in a question and answer format. Questions can be asked under the author's page. Answers are reasonable and straightforward. Great layman's resource coupled with the power of interaction with the author.


Community Nutrition

Advocate's page. Clear consumer information, links to other resources.

The Breastfeeding Page. A great source for information, discussions, information, issues and organizations.

Breast feeding information in Spanish. Quality information on many topics which, once on the screen, may be printed. Un regalo muy util desde nuestros amigos en Mexico.

School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Washington. Nutrition Sites and Homepages. Very well organized public health and nutrition resource, organized by subject with something for everyone from breastfeeding to Healthy People 2000, newsletters, school meals and much more.

Children's Nutrition Research Center, Baylor College of Medicine. A good resource page with a newsletter on-line. E-mail contact with a long list of medical doctors, nutrition scientists, dietitians and more.

USDA's School Meals Initiative for Healthy Children. Searchable index, trial search of "sodium" returned 18 items, "saturated fat" returned 32 items, any of which could be opened and read or printed. Site also has links to related pages, a training materials database and "Mealtalk," an electronic discussion group and more.


Consumer information

National Council Against Health Fraud (NCAHF). Current issues addressed, indexed articles and information helpful to consumers to protect themselves against health fraud.

Food Allergy Network (FAN). Includes food allergy facts and fiction, allergy alerts concerning foods, other useful product information.

Various consumer information services. On-line access to the famed consumer booklet from Pueblo, Colorado.

U.S. Federal Trade Commission with useful information and tips for consumers about dubious products and practices found on the Internet, consumer protection rules and many links to other interesting consumer sites.


Government Sites (not listed elsewhere)

FDA homepage. Includes a searchable database. Easy to use. Test search of  "folate" within the last year returned 36 resources.

FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Various health and food safety, useful and practical information. Great links to other useful sites. Resources designed for various users from educators to consumers. Includes information that can be ordered.

Center for Disease Control Wonder System. Includes searches and queries about public health information. Access to Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Also includes Health People 2000 information system. User must register to use the system, registration is free but the search process is fairly complicated.

Food and Nutrition Information Center. Publications list for consumers and professionals. List of free and low-cost information, many of which are available in foreign languages. Food Guide Pyramid, labeling information. USDA and links to many other government resources.

Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion. Database of CNPP files. Cost of food information, healthy eating index and other resources.

Combined Health Information Database. Searchable index. Abstracts available.


Medical Sites

Medical College of Wisconsin; Division of General Internal Medicine. Contains an on-line Clinical Calculator and other useful medical information, many WWW links.

Medscape. Access to MEDLINE database and full-text articles. Extremely useful since library access is limited to 30 minutes per week, with advance sign-up required. User must register but the service is free and access is unlimited, user friendly search process.

Renalnet. Large number of valuable renal care information and links, including a renal dietitians page. Includes an on-line forum where dietitians can post messages or respond to what is posted. Site includes other healthcare links. This is a truly valuable resource for renal care information and a terrific example of the power of the Internet as a invaluable tool in the dissemination of information.

Oncolink, The University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center. Useful resources and a searchable database. Trial search of the word "Diet" returned 166 resources, any of which was available with the simple click of the mouse. Another fine site.

Medical Matrix. A highly organized, invaluable resource. Ranked, peer-reviewed, annotated, updated clinical medicine resources.


Sports Nutrition

American Fitness Professionals & Associates. Good consumer information. Great links page.

The American College of Sports Medicine. Membership information and services.

The Gatorade Sports Science Institute. Access to articles on-line, coaches corner, FAQ, text of roundtable discussions, good information.


On-line Journals and Newsletters

American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Search abstracts, order copies of articles.

The Journal of Nutrition. Abstracts available.

The New England Journal of Medicine. Abstracts and full text articles available. A super resource.

Food Chemical News Main Page. Food Chemical News (est. 1959) provides information about food chemical regulation. Page includes articles and links, also has a document service available.

Journal of Extension. A peer reviewed journal of the Cooperative Extension. Journal issues available on-line, includes full text of articles.


Miscellaneous Sites

Food and Beverage Professionals. Other food and beverage information, newsgroups and links. Many resources.

MedSearch America. Health Career Forums, Jobs Search, Recruiter's Net, Resumes Search, Employers Profiles. Great for those in the job market.

Center for Science in the Public Interest. Groups activities, Nutrition Action Newsletter available on-line, CSPI membership and Nutrition Action Network information, many nutrition related sites.

On-line Nutrition Analysis tool. Easy to use. Results of analysis of an individual's menu for a 24 hour period can be saved to a disk. Features include a display of deficiencies and suggestions for foods rich in the nutrients lacking in the menu.


Just for fun

Bon Appetite and Gourmet Magazines on-line. Includes recipe archives and a dictionary of food-related words and many other delightful features.

The VNR Culinary Professional's Resource Center. Links to information, mailing lists and bulletin board services, wine and spirits on-line, restaurants and chefs, schools, catalogs and on-line shopping, on-line magazines, interactive discussion forums and much more.

Cooking Light Magazine Website. Includes annual recipe index. Also includes a link to the Healthy Living Channel that, among other features, has a searchable, consumer friendly health database.

Electronic Gourmet Guide (EGG). Great food related site with various topics addressed. Includes recipes, gourmet guess game, quick tips, quotes and features.

Low Fat Vegetarian recipe archive with nearly 2400 recipes in a searchable database.
